GOD’S GOOD NEWS

10 01 2019

god's good news cover

This was a very good book, which does the stories Genesis to Revelation. I did not agree with all of Dr. Graham’s assessments of the scriptures, but we all have different interpretations of the Bible, which is why I gave it a 4-star. Other than that, it was very good. They said this was for 4-11 year olds. I would say that 4 year olds would not understand most of it. Also, I believe all pre-teens would enjoy this.

This had just about every “story” from the Bible. Scott Wakefield did an awesome job with the illustrations. They made the “stories” come alive.

Invite the children you love to experience God through powerful stories from the Bible. They will imagine the walls of water in the parted Red Sea, figure out why Joseph chose to forgive his brothers, read about a paralyzed man Jesus healed, and discover God’s exciting plan for their lives. Most of all, this Bible storybook helps children understand God’s incredible love for them. Each story is equipped with a takeaway devotion from Rev. Graham. The takeaways will help children focus on God’s Word, apply it to their lives, and begin walking with God and sharing the good news from an early age.
With Bible stories told in actual Bible text, this storybook teaches that God loves us, saves us from our sin, and invites us into a new life with Him. Each entry includes the wisdom of Billy Graham, who spent his life helping people all over the world understand and respond in faith to the love and mercy of Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that God loves us, and that is good news!

ALWAYS IN GOD’S HANDS

26 11 2018

EDWARDS LG COVER

Jonathan Edwards is one of the most respected early American theologians. In Always in God’s Hands, Owen Strachan recovers the real Jonathan Edwards—the thinker, the compassionate father, the courageous reformer—as opposed to the caricature of him that is often presented. Edwards believed God was ever-present in each of our lives, caring and encouraging us in every moment. In a moving letter to his daughter, he reminds her of that comforting truth by describing her as “always in God’s hands.”

Through daily quotes from Edwards’s letters and sermons, this inspirational devotional reveals the soaring theology and comforting spirituality of one of history’s most faithful and gifted pastors. With each meditation, compiler Owen Strachan offers refreshing and relevant insights, encouraging you in your walk with God.

I was very impressed with this devotional, which I would label as “deep”.  Being a Christian for 40 years, there were times I needed to digest this.  There are many good nuggets in here.  What was also nice, was getting to know Jonathan Edwards.  I had heard about him, but never really took the time to get to know the man – his thoughts, his words of wisdom.  What he wrote has made me grow deeper in my relationship with Christ.

Owen Strachan

Owen Strachan is associate professor of Christian theology at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and serves as a senior fellow of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood. In addition to being a contributing writer for the Gospel Coalition, he has written for The Atlantic, the Washington Post, OnFaith, First Things, Christianity Today, The Federalist, and the Scottish Bulletin of Evangelical Theology. Owen also regularly speaks to media outlets, including FOX News, the Hugh Hewitt Show, and the Eric Metaxas Show, and works as a research fellow of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. He is married and is the father of three children.

THE HUNT FOR FAITH

22 08 2018

the hunt for faith cover

God’s great outdoors is the perfect place to seek out His truths and to enjoy the beautiful world He created for you. Join outdoorsman and bestselling author Steve Chapman as he shares from some of his many hunting and fishing adventures and the spiritual lessons he’s learned along the way.

Each devotion features an engaging story, a key Scripture verse, a takeaway you can apply to your own spiritual life, and a prayer to help you make a deeper connection with God.

I did not realize this was a devotional until I got into it.  This would be a very good one for those hunters out there.  With there being 52 chapters, that would come out to 1 a week.  Steve Chapman tells about his hunting and fishing expeditions.  But what’s even better, is the lessons he learned about God and His Word through his experiences in hunting.  Yes, I would highly recommend this for any avid hunter out there.

Steve Chapman

Steve Chapman and his wife, Annie Chapman, are award-winning musicians who take their message of Christ-centered family to fans all over North America. Steve’s enthusiasm for Jesus, family, hunting, and humor shine in his books, including A Look at Life from a Deer Stand (nearly 300,000 copies sold), The Hunter’s Cookbook (with Annie Chapman), and Great Hunting Stories.

Do not confuse Steve Chapman with Steven Curtis Chapman.  They are two different people.

TEARS IN A BOTTLE

9 05 2018

Psalm-56-8-You-Collect-All-My-Tears-In-Your-Bottle-blue-copy

This is a verse that got me through a very rough time in my life.  Just think of it.  God keeps track of our sorrows.  Everything that we are going through; every hurt; every problem.  He knows and He keep track of them all.  He collects my tears in His bottle.  This was a Jewish custom, that when a spouse at least, you put your tears in a bottle.  So, in this context, God collects every tear that I have shed into a bottle.  I can tell you, I have shed a many tear in my day.  I have had many heartaches.  I cried over all of them.  Just to think, my God has saved those tears.  It is beyond words for me.  Then, on top of that, He records them into a book!  I think He writes that I cried on a certain day and time and the sorrow that caused those tears.  I also believe that He saves every happy tear, too!  This scripture says all tears, so I have to believe sad, mad, happy, and joyful tears!  Every kind of tear is in that bottle with my name on it.  He cares enough for me that He saves them.

So today, if you are hurting and shedding a tear, just remember, God is on your side and saving every single tear.

A NEW THING

7 05 2018

Isaiah-43-19

Do you have times where nothing goes right?  Seems like the whole world is against you?  Well, let God make new.  He says I am doing a new thing.  He may be preparing you for something new that you know nothing about.  Yes, it can seem as if everyone is against you.  But I know Someone who isn’t.  God is always for you.  He is always on your side.  But the question remains – Are you on His side?  Do you do what He wants you to do?  I know, those are hard questions, but they need to be answered.

This is a good verse for the beginning of a new week.  If last week was the pits, let this week be new.  Start on a fresh new page – with God at the helm.  Let Him pick you up and make you new again.  He loves you so much.

Have a wonderful week!

FRIENDS

27 04 2018

proverbs_18_24

Are you showing yourself friendly?  Do you want friends?  Those are two good questions for today.  Let me ask another question:  What kind of friends do you like?

There are negative people and there are positive people.  We are drawn to the kind of people that we are like.  I know I don’t like people who say they are my friend and keep talking me down.  They won’t be my friend much longer if they keep that up.  Complainers and gossips I put in the category of negative people.  Gossips have the need to spread rumors to make them feel good.  They are insecure.   But on the other hand, encouragers are the ones who love the Lord with all their heart.  That just seems to be the trend.  They know they have a future with Him and will encourage others to have that future, too.

Now what does it mean that there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother?  Well, I can tell you, I have 4 brothers.  But, I have friends I would tell anything to.  I trust them with my life.  But my brothers?  Well, let’s just say, sibling rivalry can put a rift in any relationship.  But, my best friend?  Jesus.  I can tell Him anything and He won’t be turned away.  He is always there when I need someone.  He will do anything for me.  But, He also expects me to do my part.  And what is my part?  To obey the Word.

So, let’s make this easy.  To have a friend, be a friend.  Not grudgingly, but lovingly.  Be an encourager to someone today.
