SAINTS: BECOMING MORE THAN CHRISTIANS

5 02 2020

saints cover

I knew this was going to be a good book because I have enjoyed Addison Bevere’s parents’ books.  So to start off, this is not a book that you can just sit and read.  This is one that needs to be done with your Bible open.  He begins in explaining what saints really means.  Then he goes on that this is not the “Christian” name, but a life-style.  We can become saints here on earth.  You don’t have to die to have the “title” put on you.  This all comes from living for God.  Good job Addison!

SYNOPSIS: The Bible uses the word Christian to describe followers of Jesus a grand total of three times. But there’s another identifier that fills the pages of the New Testament–a word we’ve mistakenly reserved for the halo-wearing elite, losing something profound in the process.

Saints.

Wrapped in this ancient word is a divine invitation to discover who God created you to be and awaken to the life you were meant to know. Using Scripture and stories from his own experience, Addison Bevere makes a compelling case that the life you desire is found in the mystery of this sacred identity.

If you want to exchange lifeless religion for the wonder of following Jesus, this book will spur you onward in your journey.

DYING TO MEET JESUS

21 01 2020

dying cover

This was an interesting book that begins with the near death experience of the author, Randy Kay.  I personally thought it was going to be full of similar stories, but it wasn’t.  He then goes into teaching, which was okay.  The one that stuck in my head was about brokenness.  We need to allow to be broken to get into a closer relationship with Jesus.  If you are not going through anything, we are getting closer to Jesus.  So, yes, I do recommend reading this book.

Synopsis: Where is God when my suffering seems never-ending? Can I really find joy in this fallen world? This powerful book confronts these questions with stories of the author’s near-death experience, a daughter’s suicide attempt, mental illness, and numerous other gripping stories that demonstrate not only that God is present when we need him, but that through our trials we can find true intimacy with him.
Author Randy Kay recounts how, as a former devout agnostic, he survived a near-fatal accident while searching for the truth–and when he met the One he sought to disprove, his journey changed from a life of extreme trials into one of genuine joy. In these pages, Kay offers his testimony to show readers how God uses suffering and brokenness to build an intimate and indestructible relationship with him, while breaking down barriers and ushering the reader into an authentic relationship with the Author of love.

DISCERNMENT

13 12 2019

Discernment_Jane-Hamon_1

This is a very interesting book that needs to be read slowly so you can digest what is being said.  I call this a study book and I have highlighted many areas in here.  To learn to discern the voice of God is very important in the Christian life and Jane Hamon has a way of putting it so you can understand.  One thing that really jumped out at me was a quote she did from James Goll’s book, The Discerner: every follower of Jesus receives the gifts of revelation and discernment and every believer needs to use them.  That alone, right there, could be a sermon.  We need to realize that we can step into that gift whenever it is needed.  There is so much in this book that were eye-openers, that you will need to read to discover them.

We are living in such critical times today that it is imperative for believers to learn to use every tool given to us by the Holy Spirit. We are called to be kingdom influencers–to discern the times in which we live, to discern the moves of the Holy Spirit, and to discern angels and demons.
With extensive expertise and personal experience, prophetic leader Jane Hamon takes a deep dive, biblically and practically, into one of the least known and most unused gifts of the Holy Spirit.  This book will help you operate in greater spiritual authority and walk in wisdom as you help build God’s kingdom on earth.

UNTIL THE MOUNTAINS FALL

29 07 2019

Until Mountains Fall Cover

I truly enjoyed this book.  The only reason I put this down to a 4-star is because when I got about 75% through, I got mad and didn’t want to continue, but knew I had to.  I did get into the story of Rivkah and Malakhi, but I also got quite upset with her slave master.

This is about a young gal, Rivkah, who is recently widowed.  According to the Levitical law, she is to marry her deceased husband’s brother, Malakhi.  He has been smitten with her since age 14, but she still sees him as that boy who teased her throughout childhood.  She is a woman, having been married.  Her father is the head priest of the city, which is a refuge city.  The timing of this book is at the death of Joshua.

Rivkah and Malakhi’s cousin decide they are going to run away from their pre-arranged marriages that their fathers had made upon them.  Rivkah, through wrong decisions, ends up a slave for 5 years.  In that time, she gives birth to her husband’s son.  Having been a scribe at the temple for her father, her talents are widely sought.

In time Malakhi does find her, but will love ever blossom for her?  While she was gone had she done things she should not have done?  In the meantime, the Arameans are on their way to burn the city down.  What will happen to Rivkah?  Will she let Malakhi save her and her son?  The answers will be revealed when you read this book.

Recently widowed, Rivkah refuses to submit to the Torah law compelling her to marry her husband’s brother and instead flees Kedesh, hoping to use her talents as a scribe to support herself. Without the protections of her father, Kedesh’s head priest, and the safety of the city of refuge, Rivkah soon discovers that the cost of recklessness is her own freedom.

YOURS TRULY, THOMAS

15 07 2019

yours truly cover

This was a truly enjoyable book.  It didn’t take me long to get into it – and then I couldn’t put it down.  You get caught up in the lives of Penny and Thomas.  They both have pasts that they are running from and are in need of facing and dealing with them.  Then Thomas’ life takes a turn for the worse after he buys the Old Dawson place.  A neighbor will stoop to nothing to get rid of him.  Of course, it comes to a climax at the end.  The sweet part of this whole book is Penny loves to read letters.  That is what she did before she came to Azure Springs.  So, the question remains, will they get together?  If it is up to the boarding house owner, Margaret, the answer is yes.  But you will need to read the book to find that out!

For three years, Penny Ercanbeck has been opening other people’s mail. Dead ends are a reality for clerks at the Dead Letter Office. Still she dreams of something more–a bit of intrigue, a taste of romance, or at least a touch less loneliness. When a letter from a brokenhearted man to his one true love falls into her hands, Penny seizes this chance to do something heroic. It becomes her mission to place this lost letter into the hands of its intended recipient.
Thomas left his former life with no intention of ending up in Azure Springs, Iowa. He certainly didn’t expect a happy ending after what he had done. All he wanted to do was run and never look back. In a moment of desperation, he began to write, never really expecting a reply.
When Penny’s undertaking leads her to the intriguing man who touched her soul with his words, everything grows more complicated. She wants to find the rightful owner of the letter and yet she finds herself caring–perhaps too much–for the one who wrote it.

DELIVERED: EXPERIENCING GOD’S POWER IN YOUR PAIN

12 07 2019

Delivered cover

I absolutely loved this book!  I don’t think I have read anything that has impacted me as much as this has.  Beth Moore has done an awesome job with this.  We all find ourselves in pits at one time or another in our lives.  We get in by someone else putting us in, slipping in, or jumping in.  I see different times in my life where I have been in each of these pits multiple times.  Beth also shows you how to get out of those pits and also how to help others get out.  The big thing that stuck out to me was that when you get out, stay out!  Don’t let anyone put you back in that same pit.  Don’t slide back in.  I think that is the most dangerous spot to be in…right after you get out.  If I could have rated this higher than a 5-star, I would have.  This is a definite must read for everyone!

Based on her bestselling book, Get Out of That Pit, Beth Moore delivers a stirring message of sheer hope, utter deliverance, and glorious freedom of God.

God is in the deliverance business.  He longs for you to be free, to know the love and presence that are better than life—and the power of His Word that defies all darkness.  In Delivered, Beth Moore shares her own journey out of the pit and the way the poetic expressions of Psalm 40 rewarded her with a new song for her soul—given by her Savior and offered to you here in this soul-stirring book.  You also can be free from the worst life has to offer and learn to take Christ’s mighty arm when he reaches into the depths, and says in a way you can finally hear, Need a hand?

100 BIBLE STORIES FOR CHILDREN

30 06 2018

bible stories cover

Instill a deep love of the narrative of the Bible in your children’s hearts with this richly illustrated storybook. 100 Bible Stories for Children uses beautiful, traditional art and clear language to teach children ages 5 to 8 one hundred of the best-loved stories from the Bible, and it includes a ribbon to mark your place. The detailed illustrations will captivate your children as you read with them at bedtime or at Sunday school, and independent readers will return again and again to learn the stories of the heroes of the faith. You and your family will treasure this classic collection of Bible stories.

I was a little disappointed in this book, as I felt as if the stories themselves needed to be expounded.  What they emitted or condensed completely changed what had really happened.  I feel as if they needed to be more true to what the Word says.  I understand that they did this for children, but I would prefer the children know what happened correctly.  So, that is why I gave a 3 out of 5 stars.
